Motovun forest

Motovun forest covers a huge area of the River Mirna valley, and the valley of a smaller river, Botonega. Besides truffles, the main characteristic of the forest is a special type of oak tree (Quercus robur). This tree mostly grows in lowlands of Croatia, and it is very appreciated in carpentry, shipbuilding, art and so forth.

The Motovun forest also contains ash trees (Fraxinus angustifolia), elm (Ulmus minor), hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), alder (Alnus glutinosa), two types of poplar (Populus nigra and Populus alba), willow, etc.

This unique plant combination and moist soil is considered to be the main reason for the high value of truffles coming from our small part of the planet.
